As a homeschool mom I need all the help I can get. When it comes to curriculum and books I want the best of the best! I had the opportunity to try out this new reading program a couple months ago. Riz was in the beginning stages of learning to read and wanted to try it but was hesitant because there are SO many reading programs out there. I didn't see how this one was any different. But after listening to how this one was different than the rest I jumped on board and tried it out that night.

Their claim to fame is that you're kid will be reading in 4 weeks or your money back. True story. I was ready for the challenge! I have to say, I was skeptical, but guess what? My kid is reading like a PRO! This program is life changing! It's easy (10-15 minutes 3x per week) and my kid LOVED it!

I want to talk about 3 important things. #1 how this start up company came to be, #2 how does it work, and #3 our experience.

#1 How did Learning Dynamics come to be?

It all started in a little preschool, the kids were learning to read at an alarming rate, the preschool turned into a private school and people started asking one question "how are you teaching these kids to read so fast"? Did you know that  kids should be reading by 3rd grade?

Well, the school worked hard to make their reading program available to US! They have tested it out in schools across the country (not just their own) and it works time after time.

#2 How does it work?

These guys have done a TON of research on how kids learn! The program wasn't designed so kids will ace a test, it was designed so kids will SUCCEED at reading! They suggest only doing lessons three times per week for 10-15 minutes. They use child psychology by making the lessons incredibly fun and keep the kids wanting more since they only get to do it a few times a week.

Another awesome thing is that every time they introduce a new sound or rule they repeat it through four books so if your child doesn't ace it ont he first book you don't have to worry, they will have three more books to help commit that new sound to memory.

This also ensures that the books get easier before they get harder. Let me explain. Since the same sound or rule is reviewed for through four consecutive books, the books seem to get easier and easier until a new sound is introduced and it starts over. I have found this works wonders for a struggling reader. No one wants to struggle and struggle until that final day when they finally learn to read. Its all about the little successes along the way. Struggle a little, succeed a lot, repeat.

#3 Our experience

We had the opportunity to try the program a couple months ago. My first thoughts were a bit skeptical. I have tried a couple reading programs with my first two readers and we struggled to the finish line pulling our hair out along the way. And when I say "we" I mean my child and I both struggled. It was hard to get through lessons for me and my kids had no motivation to read. The pictures were in black and white, the stories were weird (which bothered both of us) and after we finished the program they still couldn't read real books.

When Reading Dynamics claimed that kids would read in 4 weeks I was up for the challenge. I might have been up to proving them wrong. See my 3rd child had been working through that same program that my other kids used, he was about half way through and guess what, he still couldn't read a book, he hated the lessons, and complained about what was wrong with the story. 

We started the 1st book that first night and he couldn't stop! He kept going and going (some of this was because he loved the books, some of it was due to the awesome child psychology I just learned!) I know, you're only supposed to have them read one book every other day but I just couldn't stop him. He read about 10 books and then he got to a point that he was unsure of some of the words. So this is where we stopped and "started" the program officially (because he already had a good base of letters and sounds). We worked through every book in the program and with NO STRUGGLE, NO TEARS, NO WHINING! He loved the pictures and stories. He could answer all the questions in the back of the book and best of all, I actually had a really positive experience. I actually taught a child to read with NO TEARS!!! (from me or them). I didn't think it was a possible. 

Riz finished the whole program in less than a month and a half. Because he was older (7 yrs) and already knew his letters and sounds, I just let him run with it and read a book a day (but i did have him read each book 3 times). As he was reading the last book in the program he turned to me mid book and said "Mom! It just clicked! I felt it click in my brain! I can read without thinking!" This is the first time one of my kids has said that. It was music to my ears! I have never taught a child to read so fast and actually had fun doing it! 

My 3 year old will be 4 this summer and she has already expressed intrest in learning to read, so we will be starting her this fall on the program. I'll be back to follow up how our journey goes. She doesn't know any letters or sounds so we will be starting at square one.
