Snow Shoeing STEWART FALLS - Winter Edition

*Please note, this hike falls in an avalanche zone. Always check Utah Avalanche Center before any winter hiking.

Driving up Provo Canyon to Sundance is so beautiful. You can see the amazing Bridal Veil Falls to the south, and there is an awesome paved trail to explore there.

Snowshoeing has been on my winter bucket list for years now. I always add it half heartedly, knowing that if the opportunity presents itself I'll jump at it. But I'm not going to go seeking it out.

Well our friends invited us up to their cabin in Sundance last weekend to go sledding. Little did I know that they had extra snow shoes or that their backyard butted up to Stewart Falls (another bucket list item).

We tried to hike Stewart last year during our Provo Staycation, but just couldn't squeeze it in.

After a few magical sledding runs through the forest, we strapped on the snow shoes and headed to Stewart Falls which was only about 15 minutes away. In the snow with snow shoes it ended up being about 30 minutes.

This trail connected to the public trail to Stewart Falls and straight to the beautiful waterfall. There are two trails to get to this waterfall. Both are listed below with directions. The Sundance trail is shorter and easier.

Ok, we are ready for an adventure! Also, I apparently button my coat like a child.

Tips for Snow Shoeing first timers.  Wear good boots and good socks. I didn't. I got blisters. I wish I had worn my hiking shoes vs my winter boots. Another tip, dress in layers, this is true for hiking in the winter too. And lastly, you want to take big steps and roll from your tow back. If you get lazy, your front end will catch in the snow and you'll face plant it. Just sayin'. Have fun out there!
