McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs | 12 Utah Staycations

You know we love roadside oddities here at The Salt Project. Need we say more. So we were thrilled to find McConkie Ranch just outside of Vernal on our last day in town.

Everything seems totally normal until...

... until you pull into the parking lot. That's when things get super amazing!

I'm mean, we were in oddity heaven as we started exploring this place.

They even had a lizard in the shack. Nice touch McConkie Ranch.

Equally parts creepy and charming.

The ranch is privately owned by a sweet couple that also cares for the grounds and allows the public to come to visit and hike. Please be respectful.

They have bathrooms, icy cold "soda pop" and water available. They use the honor system for payments. Drinks are $1, Entrance $5.

Just calling to us for a picnic, alas, we had no food and almost everything is closed on Sunday in Vernal. This table will have to wait until our next visit.

We left some Salt Project swag in the shack, be sure to tag us if you find it so we can share!

Ok, now on to the good part.

The Petroglyphs. A goldmine of native art is on display in the cliffs above the ranch. The hike is excellently marked, like, there is no way you can get lost, nope, not a chance. And the hike is very short.

20 minutes to a few hours in you want to take a long way.

Crazy little brother.

Obligatory family petroglyph photo.

We were sad to leave.

We enjoyed one icy cold soda pop for good measure before hitting the road.

And left our donation in the box. Cash Only.

Until next time, amazing little creepy shack in the desert. We give McConkie Ranch 10 stars and is Salt Project Approved.

Helpful Tips
  • Petroglyph hike can be as long as you want. We did about a 15-minute walk. I'd consider this hike strenuous as far as steep steps over rocks and steep edges. Our kids (2-14) walked most of this hike.
  • Bathrooms are available.
  • Honor System for drinks.
