We made another trip down to St. George recently and the kids can't get over the excitement of Glitter Mountain, so we made a trip back out to the old gypsum pit to do some amatuer mining.
This time when we went it was a bright, clear, sunny day and the moment we rounded the old dirt road and saw Glitter Mountain come into view my breath may have caught for a moment. It is truly astounding to see the bright light sparkling all over the mountainside. Pictures really don't do it justice, the entire mountainside really does shine!
The small mountain out front is the most beautiful part of the experience, but the old mining pit a few paces down below is the fun part that my kids get really excited about.
We spoke with the county commissioner down in Mohave and the mountain is on BLM property. We then spoke to the BLM office down there and they told us people are welcome to take small samples of the gypsum home, just to be safe and curtious about it. Thus, we recommend you bring a:
Chisel
Safety Glasses
Hammer
Bucket
and Sand Toys for the toddlers.
Our kids have fun trying to carve out the largest piece, the clearest piece, the thickest piece, etc.
So many people always ask us about this place, so we went ahead and updated our maps and directions for you.
