Columbus Library | Salt Lake City

Columbus Library | Salt Lake City

Is anyone else starting to get a little stir crazy at their house? Winter in Utah does this to me every year. We get a couple of really nice spring days and I start to get really excited. I plan some fun trips to get us out of the house and then we get another snowstorm that ruins all of my plans. So we are always looking to places we can get out of the house without having to spend what feels like two hours getting my kids dressed to go outside and play in the snow.

One of the places that we love to visit is the Columbus Library near our house. It’s this beautiful old historic building in South Salt Lake. We’ve been going at least a couple times a month since my oldest was a baby. I love that I can throw on their coats and their shoes and we’ll spend an hour or so at the library getting a change of scenery.

Our local library has toys and games for the kids to play with.

My kids have always loved this rocking dragon.

They usually have a giant coloring page taped to a table for them to color on.

We usually try to hit story time at the Library. Ours is at 10:30 on Friday mornings.

Laurie the librarian always has something fun for the kids to do. There are usually songs, a nursery rhyme or two and then a couple of stories.

The kids are usually getting restless at this point so she busts out the beanbags or ribbon wands and we sing songs and dance. Then we always finish with a craft that relates to the theme of the day.

Story time usually matches the school calendar so it runs from September through early December and then from January to May. During the “off season” for story time, there are still plenty of activities to keep us busy. We’ve seen a magic show, a couple of puppet shows, played with live ducks, and we even met Santa during Christmas time!

We are certainly partial to the Columbus Library but I know that all of the County Libraries have similar programs and activities. Some of the upcoming activities include: Happy Hula (celebrating Polynesian cultures with dances and music), Scales and Tales (learn about, see, and touch creepy crawlies and reptiles), and the Hero Adventure Club (adventures and activities for young super heroes). You should definitely check them out!

Thanks for the info Kasey!
